THE NODIN MANUSCRIPT
THE NODIN MANUSCRIPT: In studying the Nodin Manuscript, we shall confine ourselves to examining the essential laws to which it refers, for reproducing it in its entirety would serve no useful purpose in bringing forth the essentials you must remember about this subject. In general, you should keep in mind that these laws constitute a synthesis of those you have already studied and that they define perfectly the ontology on which rest the teachings of our Order[OR Christian Bernard Order?]. The word ontology comes from the union of two Greek terms, ontos and logos, which mean “being” and “knowledge” respectively. Ontology is therefore the science of being the knowledge of that which has been, is, and will be on the natural and universal plane. From a Rosicrucian point of view, it refers to the laws governing the evolution of matter, consciousness, and life. Considering that the first is a manifestation of Spirit, the second is an attribute of Soul, and the third is the material expression of the Vital Life Force, it follows that Rosicrucian ontology relates to the teachings concerning these three forces perpetuated by our Order.

Up to this point, we have studied the laws of matter, consciousness, and life separately. In other words, we have examined in turn the characteristics of Spirit, Soul, and Vital Life Force. In reality, these three forces are not distinct. It is true that they manifest differently on the material plane and correspond to specific aspects of Creation, but they have their source in a common energy: the Ether. In the First Temple Degree we have already stated that this Greek Ether word means “divine fire.” To the sages of ancient Greece, this energy was the primordial emanation of the Universal Intelligence. Just as they considered the Sun to be the center of planetary life, the Ether, the Divine Fire, was thought to be the source of the Cosmic Life in that it imbued all space with its divine essence. Moreover, as the Nodin Manuscript testifies, they felt that the law of duality began to manifest itself throughout the entire universe from this primordial energy.

We have just noted that the Greek philosophers thought that the law of duality began to manifest throughout the whole universe from the Ether. Convinced of the validity of this principle, the Rosicrucians have always perpetuated this idea in their teachings. Thisbeing said, you must certainly ask yourself this question: What are the two polarities of this primordial energy? The name of the first is not unknown to you, for it concerns the Universal Soul itself. As for the second, our Tradition has for centuries called it by the name Nous. This word, which is also of Greek origin, is pronounced “noose.” Forreasonsboth traditional and mystical, Rosicrucians have in the past assigned a positive predominance to the Universal Soul and a negative one to Nous. However, it is quite evident that the latter, in comparison to all the other energies which we have studed up till now, possesses an extremely positive polarity.

NOUS: Inasmuch as Ether manifests in accordance with the law of duality, Nous likewise appears in the form of a dual energy. This also holds true for the Universal Soul, for we shall see in a future degree that it is one in essence, but that it finds expression in humans according to two complementary phases. What are the two polarities of Nous? You know them already, for they were the object of a detailed study in the previous degrees. Indeed, one is Spirit and the other is Vital Life Force. These two complementary energies ultimately constitute the two aspects of the exact same emanation of the Ether. Knowing that the first gives rise to matter and the second gives rise to life, you may deduce that Nous permeates all living things. In fact, Nous provides the atoms necessary for the formation of their material bodies and from Nous is drawn the vitality necessary for the physical and psychic functioning of their bodies, no matter how primitive they may be. This dual energy therefore plays an essential role in Creation, for all that exists upon the material plane is a manifestation of it.

In previous degrees, you learned that spirit vibrations were both positive and negative and, consequentially, this energy possessed a dual polarity. Moreover, you were shown that this is also true of Vital Life Force, because it integrates material elements (food and drink) as well as immaterial elements (air and cosmic essence). When one considers these two energies as complementary phases of Nous, they express between them the law of duality, which, as we have just stated, comes into effect fromthe Ether. Also, as was previously explained, Spirit must be considered predominantly negative because of its direct link with matter and the material world. In contrast, Vital Life Force is much more immaterial in nature and relates more particularly to the spiritual dimension of all creation. Therefore, a predominantly positive quality should be attributed to it.
