FAMOUS OPINION:
Mystics have always said that Egypt was the birthplace of the mysteries which then spread to other countries-Greece most particularly- over the centuries. This statement is borne out by the following excerpt.
The ancient authors emphasized the link between Orpheus and the Orphic tradition and Egypt. For instance, Diodorus Siculus wrote in his works: “Orpheus took his theology from the Egyptians; he brought from Egypt most of the mystical teletes and ceremonies concerning his own travels, as well as the mythical story of what takes place in Hades’world. Osiris’ telete is the same as that of Dionysus, and that of Isis is quite similar to that of Demeter; only the names have been changed.” Similarly, Plutarch and Demosthenes have stated that Orpheus brought the teletes of the Dionysian, Panathenean, Thesmophorian, and Eleusinian Mysteries to Athens, and that, having traveled to Egypt, he converted the mysteries of isis and Osiris into those of Deo and Dionysus and revealed the most sacred ceremonies to the Hellenes.
Diodorus Siculus demonstrated the existence of the same connection between the Egyptian ceremonies and the Eleusinian ceremonies. He also declared: “The Eumophides are the Egyptian priests brought to Hellas; the Ceryces are the pastrophores. The ceremonies of the Eleusinian Ceres are no djfferent than tiwse of Isis held in Egypt. According to widely accepted opinion, the Egyptians have revealed to other men the teletes of all the other gods. They were the first to announce the hiera and the sebasmia-that is, the forms and actions which cannot be revealed to the uninitiated and which the Mysteries of isis teach. And these Mysteries are none other than the aidoion of Osiris, abducted and sought by the goddess wearing seven cloaks and dressed in black.”
